A double tube heat exchangers, or double wall heat exchangers, feature a second outer tube along the length of the tubes so that, in the event of a leak, fluid has a designated path out to atmosphere, where it can be seen and addressed by maintenance personnel. Double tube heat exchangers, also known as concentric tube heat exchangers, require double tube sheets to continue the leak path, but a regular shell and tube heat exchanger can also be built with a double tube sheet to mitigate the effects of a potential tube seal leak.
